Are CPO Models Better Than Other Used Vehicles?

While trying to find the right vehicle, a lot of people notice the claims about CPO models and feel that they must be the best option for a pre-owned car. We admit that there are some benefits of a CPO model that you will not find on most other used vehicles, but some of these benefits are a bit overblown and can feel like marketing gimmicks more than anything else. For example, every manufacturer likes to brag about the warranty coverage on CPO models, but they often have numerous limitations. The impressive-sounding 6-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty on CPO models from GM starts when the car is sold as new, not as a CPO vehicle – so it might have only a year of coverage on it.

Manufacturers love to talk about the high standards of their CPO vehicles, but again, this often comes across as a bit more grandiose than it really is. Looking at GM again, their CPO vehicles have to be within the last 6 model years and have fewer than 75,000 miles on them. That is great, but it is a standard many vehicles can meet; we have plenty of Chevy models that are less than 6 years old and have fewer than 75,000 miles on them. These are excellent vehicles because you know they have been pretty lightly used – plus, when it comes from us, it will typically cost less than a similar model offered as a CPO vehicle from another dealership.

What are you paying for when you spend more on a CPO model? We would say it really comes down to the illusion of peace of mind, granted by a little bit of warranty coverage and an inspection. You will find plenty of fantastic used models here at CBS Quality Cars that are in the same great condition as anything offered as a CPO vehicle and at a lower price. It all comes down to looking at what is out there and finding a car, truck, or SUV that will treat you well for many years to come.
