Fantastic SUV Options for Growing Families
Having a family is not cheap; the more your family grows, the more important it becomes to make every penny count and stick to a budget. One of the best ways to do that is by choosing a pre-owned vehicle in great shape, giving you a ride you can count on while also keeping your costs down. That’s one of the reasons we work so hard to offer fantastic used SUVs for sale so we can help our customers get what they need.
While we certainly love helping a new driver find a small SUV or assisting in finding a great truck to help you get your job done, there’s something uniquely satisfying about working with a family and getting you a vehicle that you and your loved ones can rely on for many years ahead. To help with that, today we’re going to go through some of our favorite picks for used SUVs that are great for families of five or more people.
What Kind of SUV to Choose
Before we look at some specific models, let’s review what kind of SUV will be best for your family. Most SUVs with two rows of seats are designed for a maximum of five people: two up front and three in the back. If you have a family of five, that’s going to be tight, and if you have kids who want to bring a friend along on that camping trip, you’re out of luck.
That’s why, for families of five or more, we suggest SUVs with three rows of seating, letting you comfortably fit seven or eight people in your vehicle. With that in mind, let’s look at some specific models, including three-row and full-size options. The specs below are for 2020 models and are simply an example of what you can find when exploring our extensive pre-owned inventory here at CBS Quality Cars.
The Buick Enclave
Kicking things off, we have the Buick Enclave, which is one of our favorite three-row SUVs and a great choice if you want something that nicely combines style and comfort. You get more than 97 cu.ft. of total cargo space inside this model, giving you plenty of room not only for the people in your life but also for everything else you need to bring with you. This option tends to have more luxury features than many other three-row SUVs, making it a great choice if that’s something you’re looking for.
The Cadillac XT6
Speaking of which, the Cadillac XT6 is a similar model to the Buick Enclave but with incredible luxury and sophistication built into it. This one has more than 12 cu.ft. of rear cargo area and more than 78 cu.ft. of total cargo space, with three rows of seating inside. If you’re interested in refinement and luxury for your family, then Cadillac is a terrific choice.
The Chevy Traverse
Built on the same platform as the Buick Enclave, the Chevy Traverse is a terrific three-row SUV if you like the style of the two models we just looked at but you need to stick to a tighter budget. This one has 23 cu.ft. of rear cargo space and more than 98 cu.ft. of total cargo volume inside, quite similar to the Buick. Since the Traverse has a lower starting price when sold as new, however, it is a more budget-friendly option for a growing family.
The Chevy Tahoe/Suburban
If you’re looking for something quite a bit larger, then the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban are both terrific options that are about as big as you’re going to find for SUVs. These are both full-size models designed to provide you with a ton of space—some Suburban models have seating inside for up to nine passengers. Looking at the 2020 Suburban, it has almost 40 cu.ft. of rear cargo space and more than 120 cu.ft. of total cargo volume inside, giving you an incredible amount of room for the people and things you want to bring along with you.
The Ford Explorer
Leaving GM models behind now, we come to the first of two great Ford options for a large or growing family: the Explorer. This is a three-row SUV, much like the Chevy Traverse, with a spacious interior that’s great for daily commuting and weekend enjoyment. With a little over 18 cu.ft. of rear cargo space and about 88 cu.ft. of total cargo volume inside, this one isn’t quite as large as some of the others we’ve looked at, but it’s a terrific choice for a wide range of uses.
The Ford Expedition
For a larger option from Ford, the Expedition is a full-size SUV that’s similar to what Chevy offers with their full-size models. This is closer in size to the Tahoe than the Suburban, with about 19 cu.ft. of rear cargo space and around 104 cu.ft. of total cargo volume inside. We love the Ford Expedition for large families looking for something with a touch of style and sophistication while still sticking to a reasonable budget.
The Mitsubishi Outlander
Speaking of budget, the Mitsubishi Outlander is one of the most cost-conscious options out there, with three rows of seating inside. Despite its three-row design, this is a smaller option, with about 10 cu.ft. of rear cargo space and just over 63 cu.ft. of total cargo volume inside—that smaller size is a big part of why it is offered at such a low price. One thing to note is that the 2021 model was only offered with two rows of seats, so be careful when looking at Outlander options and pay close attention to its model year and interior design.
The Nissan Pathfinder
Another budget-friendly option, the Nissan Pathfinder is a three-row SUV built for drivers with a taste for adventure. If you’re looking for a vehicle that’s perfect for taking your growing family out on camping trips, then the Pathfinder is a terrific choice. More spacious than something like the Outlander, the Pathfinder has more than 16 cu.ft. of rear cargo space and almost 80 cu.ft. of total cargo volume inside to take advantage of, giving you space for sleeping bags, tents, and more. If you enjoy a sporty, outdoor lifestyle, then the Pathfinder is hard to beat; just be sure to look for a model with its available four-wheel drive.
The Toyota Sequoia
For something on the larger side, the full-size Toyota Sequoia is a terrific option to look for when shopping for used vehicles. This is a powerful, beautifully designed SUV with almost 19 cu.ft. of rear cargo space inside and more than 120 cu.ft. of total cargo volume for you to take advantage of. One interesting note about the Sequoia is that it can handle up to 7,400 lbs of towing capacity, giving you the muscle to haul a trailer, camper, or boat behind your SUV. This is also a very budget-friendly option if you’re interested in a full-size model with plenty of power and gorgeous styling.
Get the Right SUV for Your Family
As you can see, even if you need a great SUV for a family of five or more, you still have a huge number of options available to you. Honestly, we didn’t even go into all of them here because there are just so many—so keep other options like the Toyota Highlander, the Nissan Armada, and the Honda Pilot in mind as you’re looking at different three-row models. No matter what you need in your next vehicle, there’s an SUV that’s designed to deliver everything you’re looking for.
Shopping for used models gives you a huge selection of vehicles to choose from, which can make it difficult to narrow things down and get all that you want. That’s why choosing a great dealership that will listen to you, put your needs first, and help you find the right model is important. You’ll find all of that and more here at CBS Quality Cars.
